Turn it Up – Finding Sydney’s Sound

As a part of our ongoing campaign to revitalise Sydney’s nightlife, we recently premiered the documentary film Turn it Up – Finding Sydney’s Sound by Sydney-based film-makers Nathan Richman and Samantha Holder, at a sold-out screening at the Dendy Newtown.

Turn it Up – Finding Sydney’s Sound profiles the live music scene in Sydney, which has seen some amazing artists get their break and establish successful careers, but over the years the scene has taken a big hit. Venues have been closing across the city, and our creative culture has been irrevocably altered. The doco profiles the contemporary challenges for the live music scene in Sydney, and asks how it can be revived.

Inner West Mayor, Darcy Byrne, introduced the film and spoke to the audience about the importance of live music and the work being done to ensure it has the opportunity to thrive – particularly in the Inner West.

NTIA Chair Michael Rodrigues hosted a panel discussion at the end of the screening, along with musicians Oscar McMahon and Dave Novak (Polish Club), and film-maker Nathan Richman.
