Purple Flag Applications Now Open

Applications are now open for the Purple Flag 2026 accreditation round, with precincts across NSW invited to submit a Registration of Interest if they are ready to begin the accreditation process.

Purple Flag is an internationally recognised accreditation program that celebrates precincts delivering safe, diverse, vibrant and well-managed night-time experiences. For local councils, businesses and precinct stakeholders, it offers a pathway to strengthen reputation, build public confidence and support a more vibrant going-out economy

Key dates

Registration of Interest opens: 26 May 2026
Detailed applications due: 18 August 2026
Assessment period: September to November 2026
Accreditation panel: From December 2026

The NSW Government recommends submitting a Registration of Interest early, as detailed applications typically take 6 to 10 weeks to prepare.

What is Purple Flag?

Purple Flag recognises precincts that meet high standards in managing their night-time economy.

A precinct that achieves Purple Flag accreditation demonstrates strong performance across five core principles:

  • Wellbeing: a welcoming, clean and safe environment
  • Movement: secure ways for people to arrive, move around and leave
  • Appeal: diverse night-time activities for different ages, lifestyles and cultures
  • Place: attractive and functional spaces that support a strong night-time destination
  • Strategic alignment: ongoing collaboration between local businesses, community and government agencies

Why it matters

For precincts, Purple Flag accreditation can help strengthen place reputation, increase visibility, attract visitors and support local businesses through increased foot traffic and longer dwell times.

It also encourages councils, businesses, police, transport, community stakeholders and local operators to work together on safety, amenity, governance, cultural activity and the broader night-time experience.

Who can apply?

Purple Flag is available to precincts across NSW, including both metropolitan and regional areas.

Applications are usually developed by a working group, often with support from local council and an established business group. This may include representatives from local government, licensed venues, hospitality, retail, culture, transport, safety, planning, community organisations and other night-time economy stakeholders.

How to get started

Precincts interested in accreditation should submit a Registration of Interest through the NSW Government website.

The process includes setting up a working group, developing a precinct map, completing a precinct snapshot, undertaking a self-assessment and submitting the final application for assessment and accreditation.
