NightPulse 2026 Highlights the Barriers Holding Back Sydney’s Night-Time Economy
Despite strong demand to experience Sydney after dark, NightPulse 2026 shows that affordability, transport and safety continue to limit participation in the city’s night-time economy.
Commissioned by the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), conducted by Lonergan Research and supported by the City of Sydney, the report surveyed 1,000 Greater Sydney residents to better understand how people engage with nightlife and the barriers preventing them from going out more often.
The findings paint a mixed picture. While 79% of Sydneysiders have been out in the past six months and perceptions of Sydney’s nightlife continue to improve, structural challenges remain.
Key findings from the report include:
- 70% would go out more if 24-hour public transport was available.
- 81% would go out more if nightlife were more affordable.
- 54% have recently decided not to go out because of transport accessibility or cost.
- Transport, affordability and safety remain the three biggest barriers to participation.
For venue operators, policymakers and industry stakeholders, the findings reinforce the need for continued investment and reform to support a stronger, more accessible night-time economy.
The report also includes recommendations for industry, the City of Sydney, the NSW Government and the Federal Government, providing a practical roadmap to address the barriers limiting Sydney’s night-time economy.
