Sydney’s nightlife is resilient, creative and ready to grow but it needs the right conditions to thrive.

Delivered with support from the City of Sydney, this new report from the Night Time Industries Association combines fresh consumer data with lived experience from the operators shaping Sydney’s nights. Drawing on a survey of 1,000 Greater Sydney residents and insights from a roundtable of venue and cultural leaders, it provides a clear picture of what’s driving and holding back our city after dark.

The findings are clear: Sydneysiders want to go out more often, but affordability, transport, and safety perceptions are dampening demand. Meanwhile, operators are innovating, but face rising costs, inconsistent policing, and regulatory hurdles that limit trade, especially after midnight.

Inside the report, you’ll find practical, actionable recommendations for industry, City of Sydney, NSW Government and the Commonwealth – from freezing spirits excise to trialling 24-hour summer transport.

This is a roadmap for making Sydney’s nights more diverse, welcoming and sustainable.
